Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer?

Direct thermal labels darken under the printhead and need no ribbon, which makes them a simple choice for shipping, fulfillment and other short-term labels. Thermal transfer labels are printed with a ribbon and are the better choice when barcodes must stay readable longer or resist smudging, moisture, chemicals or outdoor use. Neither method is better for every job; the right choice depends on how the label will be printed, applied, handled and stored.

Thermal Label Materials

Materials include paper, polyester, polypropylene, polyimide, Kimdura, Tyvek, Valeron, cloth and other application-specific options. Thermal transfer paper labels work for general-purpose printing, while synthetic thermal transfer labels handle tougher conditions. Labels are available on rolls, sheets or fanfold with permanent, removable or freezer adhesives. Custom thermal transfer labels can be made in the size and configuration your application requires.

Thermal Tags and Specialty Features

Thermal tags can include attachments and features such as string, elastic, wire, eyelets, reinforced patches, button punches and knife-cut radials. Special thermal transfer labels are available when the job calls for a different material, adhesive or durability level. We also supply wax, wax/resin and resin ribbons and can help identify ribbons for Zebra, SATO, Intermec, Datamax, Eltron and Printronix printers.
